Soya beans before flowering

Objectives

Agrifirma’s objective is to devote capital and expertise to develop profitable and productive farms in the Cerrados region of Brazil.  The transformation process involves land clearance, soil preparation, crop planning and expert execution to achieve globally competitive yields.

Agrifirma has  analysed opportunities in the states of Bahia, Maranhao, Goias, Piaui, Tocantins and Mato Grosso. Agrifirma’s farms are located in three clusters in Western Bahia, north east of Brasilia, the federal capital. Each cluster consists of a number of different farms which are operated as a strategic unit. Operations are currently centred on the Campo Aberto, Arrojadinho and Rio do Meio farms, all located in Western Bahia.

Crops grown vary from farm to farm, but consist of corn, soybeans, coffee or cotton. Crop rotation and other techniques ensure that all farming activity is sustainable. After harvesting the crops are sold into both domestic and export markets.

Agrifirma has an approach to business in which economic objectives are matched by an awareness of the company’s responsibility to sustain the environment and improve the quality of life of the people living and working in the areas where it does business. Brazilian laws require that between 20%-30% of farmland holdings in most states are maintained as set aside land. Agrifirma prepares comprehensive development plans for the land it owns, including a detailed assessment of their environmental and social impact.

Land transformation typically takes 3-4 years before crop yields reach their optimal levels. The company’s operations are managed from Sao Paulo by an experienced local management team with many years of relevant experience in the successful development of land for agricultural use.
